Chapter 16
I DREAMED OF MY MOTHER again. I dreamed of Lily Hayesâ fear and anger and helplessness.
Through her eyes, images were less blurry, the voices less warbling, but it was still difficult to make out much of anything. This time, it wasnât her alone or her interacting with one person. It was more from intuition and being a little in tune with her emotions that I could tell she was in front of a large, shouting crowd.
Lilyâs wrists were cuffed, but she tried her best to cover her stomach. She was rooted to the spot but frantically thinking of an escape plan. At least, thatâs what I assumed. If I were her, the first thing I would do if I were captured would be to get bloody out of thereâ
âBas!â
The female voice was unfamiliar. Was it Lilyâs, somehow speaking into my subconscious?
âBastian!â
It became clearer. No, it couldnât be her.
âHayes!â
I jolted awake from a cold stone floor. No one called me that except for Tessia Akeso.
The first thing I noticed was the metal cuffs cutting into my wrists. Well, wasnât that cruelly ironic.
Though I wanted to cling to the memory, I had a feeling that my current situation had to take precedence. My vampire senses took in the scene. It was quite different than where weâd gotten our butts kicked.
It was similar to the cave outpost: an underground space without any light except for the candles bolted into the far rock wall. My eyes adjusted to the darkness to make out the metal bars just two feet in front and to the sides. I could sense a wall behind me.
It was Emalynâs and Tessâs voices that pulled me out of the dream. I turned toward them on my right. My heart jumped into my throat. They were on the other side of the bars, only two inches apart. Even worse than seeing us separated was the fact that their faces were battered and bruisedâand caked in blood.
But the smell didnât hit my nose. The sickening stench of leather blocked it.
I tried to open my mouth to ask what in Deathâs name was happening, but all that came out was âMmm!â
âItâs to keep you from biting and being tempted by blood,â Tess said quietly.
Oh, really?!
âWeâve been captured,â Em said as I scooted over to them, where they leaned against the bars, shoulder to shoulder, as if to keep warm. âWeâre cuffed, too. We canât enact spells without our hands.â
Their voices were rough and raw. I took stock of their injuries, getting angrier with everyone I noticed. Whoever hurt them is going to pay. Iâll get this mask off and Iâll tear them toâ
I stopped the thought in its tracks. Well, that was violent. And then I remembered how Lily felt looking at herself in the mirror, the burn-the-world-down despair and anger, and then Koenâs description of her. Fiery. Stubborn. Always angry about something.
Maybe I took after her more than I knew.
Only a select few could tell me more about Lily Hayes. I needed to get the three of us back to the Kairos.
